- Welcome to CallFinder. CallFinder was developed in my spare time (which
- is a scarce commodity) over a period of two years. I hope you find it
- worthwhile. The following describes some of CallFinder's features. CallFinder
- requires System 7.
-
- CallFinder supports lookups by call, name, QTH, and zip code. Before
- performing any lookups, it is necessary to locate the databases for CallFinder.
- The first time you run CallFinder it will present a dialog box which allows
- you to select the folder containing the database files. You will have the
- option of remembering this selection. The remembered selection becomes the
- default location until another location is selected and saved. Note that
- CallFinder can not be run from a write protected volume if you choose to
- preserve the database location. The selection may be changes at ant time
- (either temporarily or permanently) by selecting "Locate Databases" from the
- File menu. This feature allows you to copy one or more databases to your hard
- disk. You can then select the CDROM temporarily to do lookups in all of the
- databases. This feature means that the program is independent of changes to
- the volume label of the CDROM. You select the path to the databases you choose
- to use. Also note that CallFinder does NOT place a file in your Preferences
- folder.
-
- Once the path to the databases has been set, CallFinder will search for all
- of the databases in the location specified. The lookup for any database which
- is not found will be disabled in the file menu. IF no databases are found, an
- error message will be displayed.
-
- The strings for the name and QTH lookups are formatted as follows. A "*"
- at the end of a string serves as a wildcard character. It causes all
- characters following the "*" to match the search target. Any string not ending
- in a "*" will match exactly. It is not necessary to enter a search string of
- "*" to match all values. Just leave the string empty. If you are searching
- for everyone named John Smith, it is advisable to enter the first name as
- "john *" to match all middle initials as well as "John Smith II".
-
- The zip code database has one anomaly: hams who did not specify a zip code
- on their forms were given a zip code of 00000. All zip code searches require
- a full five digit zip code.
-
- CallFinder allows you to copy the result of any search. The currently
- displayed call may be copied to the clipboard from the Edit menu. The entire
- list of search results may be may also be copied to a file from the Edit menu.
- In either case the format of the data copied may be selected from the Format
- menu. The file created is a text file. You may set the file creator for the
- text file to the creator of your choice. Use the Set Creator item in the Edit
- menu. The default value is "R*ch" which corresponds to BBEdit (the value for
- Microsoft Word is MSWD).
-
- At this time, only the US callsign database is supported.
-
- Changes in version 1.1:
-
- 1. You can now paste from the clipboard into edit text fields (e.g. to the
- call sign field).
-
- 2. The position of each lookup window is preserved.
-
- 3. Callfinder now uses a preferences file.
-
- 4. Cross reference records in the databases are now properly handled.
-
- I have decided to make CallFinder "charityware". If you find this program
- useful, I ask that you please send a tax deductable donation to the Pathfinder
- project:

- They do a lot of great work in support of families.
